Yep, I didn't expect this book to be as good as it is and it was really pretty good. It was marathon reading worthy in my opinion. Loved the characters and the details, and the mystery was really pretty good too. What I really liked right off the bat was the author's descriptions of the character's psychic abilities -- how she sees things, feels things, even just the descriptions of how she runs her business. This is the kind of cozy mystery that I really like. A great heroine, a sexy hero/love interest and I learn something about the "activity" that the cozy series is based on. Looking forward to reading more about Abby!

Abby Cooper Psychic Eye Psychic Eye Mysteries Book 1 Victoria Laurie Books Reviews

Have been buying one at a time to get the full series! Hard to pull myself away from these books. Eventually want to start reading Victoria Laurie's Ghoul books too! I'm not even a book reader normally, now have found that reading these get my mind off of all the chatter racing through my little brain too!
Abby get involved in solving multiple murders by a deranged ex-husband of a client's sister that she happens to do a reading for. She meets a handsome detective and ends up helping to solve another murder too.
I was looking for something other than my usual authors when I came upon this series by Victoia Laurie. (Great last name, by the way.) I downloaded the first book, "Abby Cooper Psychic Eye", and within a few minutes I knew I was hooked. Abby seems at times to be somewhat immature and self-centered, but then if that's part of her character, I can live with that. The storyline was different and I found myself drawn into the plot in no time. I'm fascinated by psychics and their abilities, and this book gives us a great insight into their very special gifts. Now that I read the first book, I can't wait to get into the rest of the series. Ms. Laurie is an excellent writer who knows how to draw you in and keep your interest. I'll bet all her books are as hard to put down as this one was. I'm so glad she didn't become a spy!
Settled in for a lovely Sunday afternoon with my new book. Fire roaring, soft French music on the stereo ......... you get the picture. LOVED the book. It's creatively well written and the psychic information is what I've found to be true, so it's great having this affirmation of how psychic news works. Then I get to page 88 ...... and the next page printed is page 169. Sigh. Penguin has totally misprinted the book. I've never seen this happen before, but was not surprised since every few pages the print in this paperback is quite light and obviously not well done. I've subsequently ordered a lot of ten of the Abby Cooper series on eBay so as not to pay anywhere near full price (these are not discounted at all!) for this poorly printed series. We shall see if I get all the pages.
I have read this series, and enjoyed them, apart from the main character! Abby is very unlikeable- immature and bad tempered. However, the storylines are good and most of the other characters are well rounded so I will continue to read them and just ignore Abby when she's being herself!
Great characters, intriguing plots, with enough red herrings and suspense to keep you reading. Love the Psychic angle. In real life the talent/gift is not 100% accurate/reliable. Some psychic's are are more accurate more often then others. As with golfer's, painter's, actor's, some have/are more talented then others, some lose they're ability over time. Then there's the corrupt, and outright charletons.
It's NOT reliable enough to totally plan/run your life by.
I met 3 professional psychic's. 1 totally 100% accurate, 1 a nationally famous psychic gave my girlfriend an accurate reading, but was 99% inaccurate with mine, 3rd psychic was so far off base it was funny.
I plan on reading more by tis author, therefore I highly recommend this book and this author.
This delightful book absolutely surprised me by how good it is. Abby Cooper is a psychic intuitive who has come to grips with her talent and is using it as her career. After growing up with parents who didn't understand her ability it has been a relief to Abby to be able to help people find some of the answers they are searching for. I really appreciated the discipline shown by this character in not allowing her clients to rely on her foretelling of their futures to rule their lives. She limits their readings to two each year and ends her sessions by telling them that they are not bound by what she has seen, they still have complete free will and can make any decisions they chose regarding their future. That was extremely refreshing to read, obviously an author with a sense of responsibility. I have since learned that this author, Victoria Laurie, is herself a psychic.

The characters in this novel were very well portrayed and I enjoyed meeting each one of them. They appealed to me as real people would, never single dimensional, but multi layered. They weren't always good or always bad, simply written to act as regular people would act. There is a great deal of humor in this book and it is very natural, not forced or silly. I appreciated that. The romantic interest which is developing between Abby and the police detective, Dutch Rivers, is totally realistic. Once again, this author has allowed these characters to learn a little about each other over a period of time and the relationship is not always smooth and romantic.

There is, however, one glaring mistake in this book which forced me to reduce my rating from 5 stars down to 4. I am a mystery reading fanatic and I've been reading mysteries for many, many years. When an author gives me definite information regarding a crime or a crime scene I keep that information in my mind because it is extremely important. In this case information was given about a death and then later in the book it was completely changed when that death was discussed again. I kept waiting for the author to tell me that someone (or actually many someones) had made a mistake, but that information never came. I can honestly say that I have never read a mystery before where this kind of mistake was present. Someone should have caught this, probably the author, but absolutely the editor or someone on the editorial staff. But then, maybe not. I've read every single review here on and this mistake hasn't been mentioned once.

I was really impressed by the writing talents of Victoria Laurie. I thoroughly enjoyed all the characters she created and the (for me) unusual gift Abby has. I will not allow that one editorial miscue to keep me from continuing on with finding out where Abby and her "crew" go next.
Way too much angst, misery and drama. In this approx. 700 page 2 book series, the Hero and Heroin is separated over 50% of the time. While during the course of the separation, they each describe to us their heart wrenching pain and anguish of being apart from their lover.
As an avid romance novel reader, I understand the author has to present the challenges and heart ache that the couples will endure. But in this case their issues seem to be more manufactured to create and heighten the drama. In other words, these incidents could have easily been avoided by simple communication and overcoming their fears and guilt.. Instead, minor issue that most couple would have easily resolved became major catastrophic long term break ups for Jackson and Catherine.

For example: Jackson failed to disclose important information about his past. In which was utterly stupid because 1) as his Publicist she would eventually find out and 2) this information would not have a negative impact on their relationship. If anything, it may have brought them closer together with a better understanding of each other.

Another example: Catherine refuse to allow Jackson to explain. Instead she automatically assumed the worse
causing her months of heart ache, pain and anguish, . Ofcourse, when she finally listen to Jackson, after being
forced, she realized it was not as bad she thought....., Aaaugh,, so annoying.

My suggestions to the author.

As oppose to you having Jackson and Catherine burning up the pages of being separated, allow them to work through their issues early on, endure other challenges together, ie the ex fiancé, allowing them to overcome any obstacles, and build a stronger unit as a couple. If you need an example of how it is done, I recommend you read :The Unscripted series by Tina Reber. While the couple had a minor breakup , as
the reader you got to witness a couple who fought for each other, build a stronger union, enabling them to endure any obstacles that came in their path.
This is part two of Catherine and Jackson's story, told in a dual, first person POV. Catherine is more emotionally stable now; she's got her emotional head screwed on straight...she's strong and respects herself. She's gained direction. This second part deals with Catherine and Jackson working through all the ups/downs of a young relationship and getting more personal with each other intimately. Not just the hot steamy moments, but learning one another. Their love play was so much fun...their teasing and humorous banter a delight. Their arguments and angsty controversy added fuel to their passionate fire. And the impending doom that was ever lurking in the shadows was perfectly conveyed. The drama and turmoil was raw and real. I loved Catherine's stronger character. She gained my respect (lacking in book #1) Beloved (The Salvation Series Book 1) and many of her doubts and questions got answered. Most importantly was the resounding loss and heartbreak I felt at our fallen heroes...our military who sacrifice life and family to serve their country for our freedom(s). I don't like to read books that make me cry or make me depressed, and while this book sometimes turned on the waterworks, the HEA gave me a brilliant smile and the endgame wasn't depressing. Ms. Michaels conveyed our Military's sacrifice with perfect clarity...and I sometimes bawled buckets. BUCKETS! This was a perfectly lovely conclusion, complete with a perfect HEA, of Catherine and Jacksons long tumultuous journey to find each other...and I loved it all. Brilliant writing.
After reading the first book, 'Beloved,' I was expecting something much different than this. I really don't understand the 5 star reviews. Catherine was one of the most annoying, selfish, and immature heroines that I have ever come across. I really expected this second book to show some growth in her character. Instead, it was just more of the same old angst and indecision on her part. Even her friends try to straighten out her thinking and get nowhere with the whiny brat. I loved all the secondary characters and Jackson is the perfect hero. Too perfect for her! And the ending....well, I have to say that I was upset with that, too. I wanted to see her make some sort of effort to make the romance work.

I do love Corinne Michaels writing style. Had she combined the two books into one, I think it would have made a better story. In this one, I just kept skipping the sex scenes and half of the "oh, another man is doing me wrong" dialogue to get to the ending.
There can be many different ways of enjoying this book, for example, as an agonizing love story of two young people with some predicaments resembling those of Virgin Mary and Joseph, in which case, a very intense romance/dedication with impossibility of their union, however, leading to preoccupation, what I would simply call--I want it, but I shouldn't, so I won't, but I will forever think about it--syndrome.

But I read it more as constant dialogues/disputes inside of a thinking person---about the meaning/purposes/pursuit of virtues, about the existence of retraints through religious framework, about the existence of freedom both for emotions/intellect and self effacement, and all those unanswerable questions...

The point, may be not in the answers, but in the pursuits which also present dangers and agony of self denial and ultimate demise, "I felt strange contentment that filled my whole being in your presence; 'a contentment so great' you said, that I desire nothing beyond!' Alas! that is just what makes me uneasy...." then doubting, "why do you tear off your wings?", another doubts "Sometimes I doubt whether there is any other virtue than love...to love as much as possible and continually more and more...But at other times, alas! virtue appears to me to be nothing but resistance to love. You can bet that old Omar Khayyam loved a few women in his day and when he got out there under the spreading bough with his loaf of bread, a book of verse, and a jug of wine, he did not fail to eat, drink, recite, and all the rest. That's what I think life is about. Dreams are central, but if you have a chance to realize your dream, and you don't because you think you'll be happier if you don't, then your dreams are just so much junk and you are kidding yourself. Self-denial may be good for your health, but not for your soul.

Andre Gide wrote this novel back before World War I, when extreme sensibility had not been crushed by the horrors of modern war; a time when the words `holocaust' or `genocide' had not been much heard. I am not claiming that this is a bad novel---no, on the contrary---it is a very complex and finely-crafted piece of literature. However, I found it impossible to like. Jerome and Alissa, two extremely sensitive and religious young people in Normandy, fall in love early in life, but spend the rest of the novel avoiding each other, sacrificing themselves for `purity', turning to God instead of to each other, embarassed by their own passion, and other vain exercises in psychological self-mutilation. The twists and turns that Gide manages to write into this short, but extremely complex novel are breathtakingly clever and believable, but the whole effect was to make me feel somewhat nauseous and exceedingly disturbed. Alissa writes to her lover who thinks only of her, "No, don't cut short your journey for the sake of a few days' meeting. Seriously, it is better that we should not see each other again just yet. Believe me, I could not think of you more if you were with me. I should be sorry to give you pain, but I have come to the point of no longer wanting your presence---now. Shall I confess ? If I knew you were coming this evening I should fly away." And so it goes, desire, rejection, reunion, the heights of platonic passion, and again separation. A second love story underlines the first to give it the traceries of poignancy. Some years ago in Australia, there was a campaign to get people away from their television sets, out to do some healthier activity. The slogan then was "Life ! Be in it !" This couple's slogan is definitely, "Life ! Be out of it !"

If you have read Kafka's "The Castle" and enjoyed it, then this book is definitely for you. If you ever thrilled to Ring Lardner's "The Ecstasy of Owen Muir" or Kawabata Yasunari's "House of Sleeping Beauties", then I suppose you will be drawn to STRAIT IS THE GATE. I am not an expert on Gide by any means, but it may be that he wanted to write several books showing the complex depths of various human emotions. It's five star writing, but in the opinion of this reviewer, it is a twisted book that will not give you much pleasure.
I read this book long long ago when I was 15 or so. It was one of the first real literary works I have ever read, and, at that age, the purity in human relationship which this story pursuits came through naturally for me (getting ideas about human relationship through this book was definitely better than through tabloids or crappy magazines or romance novels or Hollywood movies!). I have never cried or suffered over a relationship, and been happily married for 25 yrs now.

In the Afterward in the edition I have read, the translator explained that the story reflects Gide's own marriage, or the relationship with his wife. Gide loved his wife dearly, but they hardly had a sexual relationship, or something to that effect, and throughout their marriage, Gide was tormented.

To me, at age 15, the idea, the kind of love that Alissa was looking for -- "divine" and on a higher plane, spiritual than physical, intangible than tangible, and eternal and true -- was quite attractive. It may look unhealthy, but you don't read a story and take it literally. It is a story of Gide's thoughts and ideals, not the story of literal facts. You don't really live your ideal, but to keep that ideal in your mind while you live your daily life is a great way to live.

This book's ideal doesn't go with today's trend or culture, and it is hard to understand. But I think Gide's endeaver was well worth it. It's a very good book to read, especially for young people. It will take you to a -- if not a higher plane, a different realm, and you will see love and relationship from a totally different angle.
I read it in Korean some times ago and recently again, and in English in this time,
I like it.
I became to know more about author Andre Gide. This book's title seems from the Bible.(Mathew 7-13-14)
Sung K. Moon
I had never heard of this book before I found it on Amazon and looked at reviews. My granddaughter is 8 and is an advanced reader with an outstanding vocabulary, but she is still only 8 and is not ready to process disturbing material--and I don't want her to internalize it! So I choose books and read them myself. This 1935 book has a bucolic setting in Hungary, but the farm is not idealized, and the characters all work hard at chores. The two children have engaging personalities, naughty in a Tom Sawyer kind of way, and the action is lively and dangerous but no one is ever seriously injured. The only possibly disturbing sequence is in a storytelling segment about Atilla the Hun (these are after all Hungarian characters) in which his military history is told in plain terms. Raiding and fighting and killing are mentioned, but not raping. The context is a legend that the Milky Way is Atilla's army, which can come back from the sky. All in all, the story is encouraging, uplifting, wholesome, and entertaining--but in no way namby-pamby or prissy. This would be a good read-aloud book.

The Good Master Puffin Newbery Library Kate Seredy Books Reviews

The rave reviews of this book are true. Kate Seredy (prounounced SHARE-ed-ee) did a wonderful job on this book. My children (a girl, 9, and a boy, 6) both really loved this book, and it's not always easy to find stories that suit both of them at the same time. To tell the truth, I think my wife and I fully enjoyed the book as much as the children. Buy the hardcover, because it's likely to become a well-worn favorite.
I really can't praise Seredy enough on her work in this book - it's full of life, makes good points and lessons, is fun and humorous, a well-told story, and has beautiful charcoal illustrations by the author. (I only wish these drawings were presented in a finer fashion, as befits them. One can only hope this will be remedied in a future edition.)
Apparently, Seredy started out as an illustrator of children's books, and only began writing late in her career. Too bad, because she is a master of both crafts, and one suspects there is a strong autobiographical element in the charming but mischievous character of Kate. Whatever its genesis, this is a spellbinding tale. Buy this book - your children will love having it read to them, and you will love reading it.
I was delighted to find a copy of this book with illustrations by Kate Seredy - Her choice of color based in traditional Hungarian design is as much a part of the pre WWI story of life on the plains of Hungary. I read this story as a child after I first read 'The Singing Tree.'

During 1939 and 1940 we were hearing bits of what was happening in Europe and the story in 'The Singing Tree' although about an earlier world war, brought the news down to my eight and nine year old level - I admired how the women and children kept life going until the Uncle returns. Then I had to read 'The Good Master.'

There are many publications of 'The Good Master,' a story about life on the Hungarian plains, with a cover illustration taken from inside the book. However, for me it was not the same until I found a copy of the original illustrated cover with all the color and tradition of Hungarian folk art to pass on to the child of a friend.

Also, there is something special about giving a gift of a used book. There is wonder in knowing someone had read the story and you are following, holding a book just as they held the book while reading the same story.
Kate Seredy's "The Good Master" is a charming historical novel which chronicles the adventures of Jansci and Kate, young cousins growing up in pre-world war Hungary. The mischievous, uncontrolled Kate is sent to Jansci's father's farm for reforming, and at first doesn't like the idea one bit. However, she eventually finds healing and peace through encountering the natural beauty of the country, the joy of handling animals, and the unselfish love of Jansci's family.

This book is intended for a 10-12 year old audience, but could be read aloud to a younger child, or enjoyed by an adult. Seredy's prose is extremely well written, and the adventures of the cousins touching and humorous by turns.

After reading the "Good Master", you will almost certainly find yourself purchasing the sequel, "The Singing Tree" .
Wonderful children's chapter book, with lush pencil illustrations of Hungarian farm life prior to (and in the next volume during) WWI.

One of my top 10 children's chapter books.

The book is great for reading out loud for 10 and under, or for beginning readers. The author has a feel for the rhythm of seasons in country life that any farmer across the world would appreciate.
I was first exposed to this story in 5th grade back in the 1960s. It's been one of my favorites ever since.

As a teacher, I read the story to my class. They were enthralled by the adventures of Kate & Janci. I used the story as part of my multi-cultural program. Besides giving a glimpse into what the world was like when their grandparents and great grandparents were young, the way the author incorporates customs and folk lore into her books expands the horizons of my students on many levels. Through the years I've shared this book with hundreds of children in many grade levels. Both boys and girls can relate and Kate is not hampered by out-dated expectations of being a "good" girl. She is as robust and couragous as her male cousin.

I'm now buying this and the sequel, The Singing Tree for my god daughter.

Whether they can read the adventures for themselves or are listening to the tale as part of a nightly installment, children will enjoy participating vicariously in the adventures of Kate & Jansi.
In 1964, my third-grade teacher read this book to us. The whole class was held spellbound by the tale of the headstrong Hungarian city girl who is sent to live with her uncle, aunt, and cousin in the country. Recently, I bought it and read it with my own eyes for the first time. It still holds up!

The Mistake OffCampus Volume 2 Elle Kennedy Books

Starting out slow, I had a hard time getting into this story. Longing for your best friend's girlfriend is depressing at best, and sucks big time every other day. However, the idea of two brothers dedicating their own lives to keeping their alcoholic father's business for him was a little harder to swallow, especially given Logan's talent on the ice. Neither his brother or father really supported HIM. He was only a young kid when he began taking on way more than he ought to have, and the older men in his life didn't get that. Thank the Lord for his coach!

Anyway, once Logan realizes Grace's worth and beauty, his life gets better, or, at least, his attitude about his life improves. Their story isn't too different from other college kids who become a couple, but the writer has done a solid job of portraying the agony, pain, and suffering Logan lived with. Despite being pleasing to the eye, he's actually a good man who comes through for Grace, though I think observing Garrett and Hannah did him the most good since it taught him about being half of a couple. So, three stars for a.solid job.

The Mistake OffCampus Volume 2 Elle Kennedy Books Reviews

The Mistake, what to say about The Mistake...

I didn't care for it. What worked for The Deal did nothing for The Mistake. The humor was flat, the romance was...meh, and the story itself was pretty--I hate to say it boring.

I just didn't care for these characters. Grace starts off as this sweet, cherub-faced, shy girl--who blabs and likes a guy she can't believe we even give her a second look.

Logan is sort of charming. He sleeps around like most of his teammates and he has no interest in a relationship--at least he hasn't. Until Grace of course.

Grace and Logan come together by chance encounter. They have fun--they enjoy each other--then Logan screws up.

Some months go by and Grace is back--a little jaded, and far from the weak shy blabby girl she used to be. And, now Logan realizes how much he wants her--but she won't let him back that easily.

This is where the book lost me. It wasn't so much the winning her back--because that was cute. It was the change in Grace. Sure she was stronger. But in my honest opinion she was unnecessarily meaner. Sure what happened between them was humiliating but I just found some, SOME of her behavior unwarranted. I didn't find it endearing. Not at all.

Logan was better in the second half of the novel. He seemed to find himself and he was slightly more charming--once he put his player days aside. But it was just something about him that did nothing for me. Not like Garrett in The Deal. Even without comparing the two, I just, Logan was just okay to me.

This entire book was okay to me. I just have zero care to give for any of it. The characters, the story, their background--whatever. It felt like I was going through the motion--and that's the worst feeling to have.

I don't think I'm going to bother with The Score because I'm not sure it will be any better than this one. This might be one of those scenarios where the original is all you need.
The Mistake is the second book on the Off Campus series by Elle Kennedy. The Mistake is Logan’s book and I can honestly say that when I read The Deal, I fell head over heels for this character from the moment I met him. How can you not love John Logan and his cocky grin?
John Logan is a player a fact that he makes no excuses for. He is a very well-known member of the Briar University hockey team and because of this; he has no problems getting the female students attention. In fact he has no issues getting any females attention, at all. But lately Logan has realized that he has been hooking up even more frequently than usual, even by his own standards. In fact his friends are noticing it as well, but what they do not know, is that he has a reason for his behavior. He is just not willing to admit it or even consider dealing with it because he is far more comfortable with running away from the problem, then facing it head on.

“This obsession with Hannah Wells is really starting to mess with my head. I need to get laid. ASAP.”

Grace Ivers is a freshman at Briar University and she is well aware of who John Logan is. Her best friend has been chasing Dean, one of Logan’s teammates for quite some time now with no success. When she bumps into Logan at a party on campus one night, immediately following one of his many hook ups she is struck by his hotness and cocky attitude, but quickly pulls herself out of the lustful fog. John Logan is a player and there is no way he would ever be interested in her, the freshman virgin. Grace also has no interest in being yet another notch on Logan’s seemingly never ending belt loop.

When Logan randomly knocks on Grace’s dorm room door one evening looking for a party, she is shocked. What could he possibly want with her? It has to be a mistake… and it is, he has the wrong room but, what happens next as they say is history. Grace and Logan are attracted to one and other and the sexual tension is thick enough to cut with a knife. Lust prevails and they do hook up that night, but Logan gets freaked out and leaves Grace “hanging” immediately afterwards. She is confused and hurt. Logan is totally clueless; he does this all the time, hooks up and runs, but then it hits him, Grace deserves better than that. Grace is better than that.

“I made the guy come last night and he didn’t even stick around long enough to kiss me goodbye. So yeah, I have to face the facts I’m just another girl on a long list of John Logan’s conquests.”

“Leaving a girl wanting isn’t just embarrassing. It’s unacceptable.”

Grace is not a puck bunny, in fact she doesn’t even like hockey, she prefers football. Logan doesn’t do relationships; he has no time, between Hockey and dealing with his troubled family life. When Logan is finally realizes he has feelings for Grace he doesn’t handle it well at all. He wants what Garrett has with Hannah. He is lonely and the never ending line of hook ups no longer interests him, he’s thinking constantly of Grace, other women no longer interest him at all. But he has screwed up royally; can he ever win Grace back?

“It's a damn shame that duels don't play a role in the modern world anymore.”

The Deal was the first book I had ever read by this author and I loved it, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on The Mistake. It then got buried on my kindle and I just realized I hadn’t yet gotten to read it and I moved up the list. I’m so very glad that I did, I love Elle Kennedy’s style of writing and being a Canadian I have a real soft spot for handsome, cocky, hockey players. I love that this book was a fabulous balance of sexy and steamy, sweet and sassy, funny and emotional. I love the characters, every single one of them. I especially love that the female main characters are spunky and sassy. The story line was great and I thought that the banter between characters was very amusing. I love that each book has a happily ever after and I’m really excited now to begin reading The Score. I hope that each and every one of the crew is given their own story in this series before it ends, because now I’m addicted. I’m reading The Score next; I’m excited to read Ali and Dean’s story. If you have not yet begun to read this series, I highly recommend it; I am loving this series by this fabulous Canadian author.

“This guy continues to surprise me. To awe me. He’s a better person than I am, better than he gives himself credit for, and if I wasn’t sure about it before, then I’m damn well sure of it now. I love him.”

“I need you. I can’t stand the thought of being without you.” He releases a shaky breath. “You’re the last person I think about before I go to sleep, and the first person I think about when I open my eyes in the morning. You’re it for me, baby.”

I thoroughly enjoyed this original, inventive, and convention-bending romp. This may not be for you if you are easily offended by irreverent musings of fictional characters — about religion, faith, philosophy, ethics, science, and sex — that might not mirror your own beliefs. Be patient — the unusual and important second chapter resolves this oddness as two friends (a lapsed Catholic “novelist” and a true-believer pastor) begin a dialogue that provides context for the observations, stories, and a near-novella that develop the themes. These are not cookie-cutter characters — they are fully-developed, flawed, unexpected, and amusing.

The frequent off-beat humor comes in many forms — intellectual, observational, slapstick, and groaners — so be ready to supply your own laugh track.
I really enjoyed this book. This well written and well researched novel was at the same time thought provoking, and entertaining. Explore your own beliefs through the exchanges of it's two main characters and be surprised along the way.
Mike Ellsworth's book "Misheard Lyrics" is the journey of two good friends, Charles and Chip (one an author, the other a Methodist Minister), down the road of theism, anti-theism and all theisms in between.

They discuss, in no particular order Mormonism, Mandaeism, The Rapture, The Second Coming, What if Christ came from a rich family, or in modern times, or both, Christian Scientists, Chaos Magic and much more.

The book questions the lyrics we hear in music and the stories we read in religious texts...is what we are hearing or reading actually what was meant by the author or performer? With religious texts over the many years or transcribing and translation how can they possibly be accurate?

There is a strong chapter on Empathy, and how it can heal. This includes a very interesting heroine named Jeannie at I would like to get to know better.

It's a good read and makes one think..."Did I hear that right"?
I wasn't quite sure what to expect when I ordered this book, and I was really glad that I went for it.
I actually ordered two, so I could gift a copy to a friend who I knew would enjoy it, after seeing the pre-views.

This book has really great, unpredictable stories in it. Each one is so unique, entertaining, sometimes shocking, and worth the time to escape into.

I couldn't put it down until I got to the end of the chapter, and even then, I couldn't wait to get back to it.
Glad I took a chance on this book. I was riveted while reading it, and I am pretty sure you will be as well.
Mike Ellsworth’s novel, MISHEARD LYRICS WHAT IF EVERYTHING YOU HEARD WAS WRONG?, is both entertaining and serious.

The two main characters are Chip and Charles. The former is a Methodist minister with a rebellious streak that almost prevented him from graduating from divinity school. The latter, who was raised Catholic but had rejected the Catholic message by the time he was 12, is a writer who is attempting to write his first novel. Both are looking for answers.

The novel combines magic, dream and reality, and important dualities include humanity and divinity, good and evil, dream and reality, and love and power.

As Charles searches for answers, he leads us through various religions and possible Apocalypses. And as he completes each chapter, he gets together with Chip, with whom, after much obscene byplay, he discusses some of the theological issues.

For me, two scenes stood out. In the first, Mormon and former presidential candidate John Mittney, is influenced and finally led by a Mandaean woman, who convinces him of the errors of Mormonism and tells him that he and a thoroughly human Jesus have been chosen as the “two Witnesses to the Exaltation.”

In the second, AI expert and data scientist Jeannie Darcy discovers that she can help people by using the information in government databases, which she has an uncanny ability to assimilate. She is, by the way, 33, the traditionally stated age at which Christ was crucified.

The more of her that is connected to the computer, the more power she has to solve the world’s problems, and eventually she succeeds in eliminating terrorism. She then turns to the much bigger problem of drug addiction but finds she can only progress if she joins her entire soul to the computer. She therefore gives up her body and her boyfriend Juston, so she can gain sufficient power to serve humanity.

Toward the end of the novel, Charles turns to snagology, the most important tenet of which is “I am the only person in the Universe and I exist for the entertainment of the Viewerverse,” in other words, for those who are watching a cosmic reality show, of which he is the star. As the religion becomes more popular, however, other people want to be recognized, and he eventually leaves it, in part because it is too solipsistic.

In the final scenes of the novel, Charles is shot by his ex-lover Edie, who then kills herself. What does he do? He heads to the nearest Catholic church to make his first confession in 40 years, after which he wakes up in the hospital. Is this a conversion of sorts? We don’t know.

Meanwhile, he sees Chip for the last time, who reveals that he is abandoning his wife and child to head to California with the church secretary in tow, and it is clear that he may have misheard the lyrics of Methodism and that both of them may have misheard the lyrics of the “universal song.”
Suspense is the key word that describes this novel. It is not very long at 164 pages but it is very exciting . Is the plot plausible? This is a hurdle that has to be surmounted. I had no trouble with that but then I am willing to believe just about anything is possible. The book was actually better than the description on the back cover.

Out of My Head Didier Van Cauwelaert Books Reviews

Sounds the like the book The Man With My Face, which was also made into a film, in which a man comes home to find his wife with a man who looks just like him.
Didier Van Cauwelaert's Out of My Head, translated by Mark Polizzotti from the French, (Other Press, 2004) could easily be judged by the fact that the work is not intact in its original state. As in the case of a book of ancient Hindi poetry I read not too long ago that had only recently been translated from abysmal readings of the early 20th century (Songs of the Sons and Daughters of Buddha, trans. Anne Waldman, Andrew Schelling), the magnitude to which a bad translation can change the flow and meaning of even very good prose and poetry is a significant issue when examining the text of a translated work. However, most of the problems I found in reading Van Cauwelaert's second novel had nothing to do with a quirkily placed word, or perhaps a dull passage that might have been exciting in its original Romance tongue. What I read was probably one of the most confusing, and least entertaining texts I've ever run across in my life, and if structure's the problem, we have no one. If to be understood as a bid at existentialism, Out of My Head fails parlously to reach the mark of anything more than a jumble of abstract ideas mixed with the basest form of "mystery thriller", in the school of any number of back-of-the-issue newsprint editions. I was thoroughly disappointed anyone with an IQ higher than that of a cabbage would assign any cohesive and general merit whatsoever to this work.

The story is ostensibly a tale of mistaken identity- but whose? Protagonist Martin Harris (hence called "Martin Harris One") shows up to his flat in Paris after a car accident and a short coma to have the door opened by not his wife, but a stranger- a stranger who his wife calls "Martin Harris" (hence called "Martin Harris Two"). And who everyone else in the BUILDING calls Martin Harris. A man who, as Martin Harris One has no identification on him following the accident, is, for all intents and purposes, the one true Martin Harris. An interesting twist initially on the urban legend of a daughter coming back to the hotel after fetching her mother's prescription to find her mother gone, the hotel room repainted, and any recollection of either she or her mother erased. The explanation in that story was simply that the mother had yellow fever, or a similar disease, and to prevent panic over an epidemic, the woman was simply "erased" by the government. However, Martin Harris One has not been erased- he's been, by appearances, duplicated and stamped obsolete in face of Martin Harris Two. The chase that ensues weaves in and out of Martin's attempt to prove the authenticity of what he considers to be his identity.

The idea that should be important in this book is Martin Harris One's reaction, and the projection of the reader in their imagination into a similar predicament, to having to question the property of one's own memories and identity as specifically one's own. The prevailing idea is, you can lose your own identity, through brain alteration, coma-induced memory loss, etc...but how would it be if someone could take it from you? No one recognizes Martin Harris One as the real Martin Harris but himself. And thus, do his own memories alone make him who he is, or not? In one particularly mind boggling confrontation, both Martin Harrises are gathered to go through a strange drilling of questions from one of Martin Harris's colleagues in his research in the field of botany. Questions are asked that only the real Martin Harris should know about his own research, and Martin Harris One realizes for the first time that this man is no simple imposter, but a man with his very same memories. When the path of questioning veers to the personal, questions about his childhood, his father, his first job- Martin Harris Two answers letter perfectly, in exactly the words Martin Harris One would have used. What does this mean? Without his own, distinct memories, is Martin Harris One any more legitimate than Martin Harris Two?

The philosophical arguments that tentatively raise their multi-faceted heads are interesting, but the actual footwork of writing the novel seems like loosely drawn pencils connections scrawled shorthand on a legal pad. Less than an afterthought, and more of a complete hodge podge of "And then the character went here! No, wait, then the character met this person! Oh, wait, and there was a sensual encounter! Mm, that'll do it!" The strain of the plot called for a Beckett-esque writer who could abstractly look at the points presented and stitch them into some, though abstract, cohesive narrative instead of what we get, which is an odd combination of Remington Steele and Sartre. Two things, right up there with battery acid and orange juice, which should never mix. The offhand additions of the occasional bra-less salesclerk oggling, a brief encounter with quasi-main character /confidante/taxi driver Muriel, and the EVER SO CONSTANT plot switcheroos left me at the last page going "Oh please God don't tell me this is how he's going to end it. Oh God. This IS how he's going to end it." Initially intrigued by the "is he or ISN'T he who he says he is" dilemma, I was completely uninterested by the end of the book, turned off by the main character's unlikeability, and the heavy-handedness of the author's treatment of what could have been a fascinating subject matter I closed the book without my usual desire, post-reading anything, to go "google" the author and figure out, good or bad, if the book I'd just read was a fluke. Because at the end of this book, I didn't care if it was a fluke. I knew it was a badly written book, and I knew while maybe I hadn't wasted three straight hours of my life in reading it, I could have at least put them to better use. As in maybe, washing my hair. Or reading the nutrition facts on a cannister of salt. Lots of things, really.

Thanks, Didier Van Cauwelaeart.
Out of My Head is an entertaining and gripping psychological thriller. The premise is simple Martin Harris, an American man who has just moved to Paris wakes up from a coma and heads towards the new apartment he shares with his wife. He gets there to find another man living there, claiming to be him. Harris then embarks on a Kafkaesque quest to regain his identity, where he ponders the nature of identity itself, with the help of a lonely neurologist and an enthusiastic cab driver. This is a slim, clever novel; Van Cauwelaert will have you fooled. Enjoy this engrossing novel.
This might have been a great novel if the author had chosen to keep the elements simple. Martin Harris, an unassuming botanist, learns that somebody has stolen his identity. In his quest to prove himself, Harris discovers more about his own past than he ever imagined. While this is an interesting premise, the author complicates the story by introducing too many details that go nowhere. Cauwelaart could have composed a surrealistic piece, but instead he introduces an unnecessary twist into the last quarter of the text.
While a weak ending hurts somewhat the overall impression one might get from this book, it's still a thought-provoking (and brief!) read.

After awakening from a coma, Martin Harris discovers that he has been "replaced" by someone else with his name, and that nobody from his former life recognizes or acknowledges him. Martin spends the novel doing 2 things - trying to prove to others who he really is, and questioning his own existence.

While he may not be breaking any new ground, Van Cauweleart definitely makes the reader think about the value and meaning of memories and self-awareness. A great book, one that would likely be worthy of 5 stars if not for the poor finish.
Out of My Head is one of those few books that you pick up, start reading, and just don't want to put down! Incidentally you can also get this republished under the same title as the 2011 movie Unknown. So get whichever is cheaper.

When a scientist and expert on every little detail of the plant kingdom awakens from a coma after his taxi crashed in Paris he is disturbed to discover his wife and more importantly the man who is in his apartment and claims to be him, say he's not Martin Harris. He knows this to be a lie but has no idea what exactly is going on. He tries to get the police involved but the imposter has ID, his neighbours all verify him to be so and most importantly his wife claims she doesn't know who he is, that the imposter is her husband and she's quite scared of this obviously mentally unbalanced man. Martin is determined to prove he is who he says he is, but is he?

This is a nice Harlan Coben/Linwood Barclay style novel, where the reader can easily put themselves in Mark's shoes and ask themselves, what would I do? It's a great masterpiece for the most part, except for the ending which seems rushed and there to fit under a word count. If a bit more effort had been put extending out the ending so it wasn't so convenient, thereby delivering more satisfaction for the reader who has come along on the journey, then I'd rate this one of the greatest masterpieces I've read in a while.
Loved this book and am now hooked on the series because it ended in a cliffhanger, but while the voice actress did a fine job with the female main character and other supporting characters, the interpretation of the main male character was like nails on a chalkboard. Very disappointed to see that she is the same actor doing the rest of this series because now I can't listen to them on road trips (which I take frequently). For whatever reason, she gave Bones a high-pitched nasal-y Cockney accent, but from the way she portrayed the other male characters, she is clearly able to do a deeper pitch and a much better British accent. Honestly, I had to FF the love scenes because it was a major turnoff. And then when I tried to pick up and read it on my Kindle, I couldn't get that awful impression out of my head when reading his scenes.

Otherwise, a very innovative take on the vampire angle with strong world-building and a heroine worth rooting for!
I remember reading some of these books out of order a few years ago. I didn't read this one, though, and I'm thinking they might get better further along in the series because I do not remember feeling this let down by the books. This is an interesting story with lots of action but I won't bother to download any more of the series because, as much as I like Bones, Cat is the most annoying character ever. I wanted someone to duct tape her mouth, she's such a pain in the butt. She is supposed to be so badass but she really irks me - her temper, the dialogue, how bossy she is - I wanted to like her but I ended up wishing the vampires would take her out. Her mother, who blessedly is only in the book for a short time, is a crazy shrew, too. I liked her crew, for the most part, although the story basically has nearly every man falling all
over themselves for the bitchy Cat. Bones and his vampire friends are cool (especially Bones) but not cool enough to offset Cat. It's also apparent Ms. Frost modeled Bones after the Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Spike, and that's just lazy, luv. He fell in love right away with Cat but why? Did I mention I didn't like Cat?
I was so excited to start this book, thinking the ending of book 1 had to be addressed quickly. I wasn’t really wrong, but I was definitely in for a couple surprises. It’s been a few years and Cat as other potential lovers. This made the beginning kind of slow for me. When Bones was finally reintroduced, I couldn’t get enough. The entire process of their full reunion was amazing. The vampire conflict was two-fold. We deal with an old flame of Bones’s which results in one of the hottest chapters I’ve ever read in ANY book. The big one is Bones’s sire and the showdown with him is oh so satisfying. The very end of the book is actually heartwarming, which was a lot better than the ending of book 1.

One Foot in the Grave is straight up exquisite. I couldn’t get enough of all the characters and the excitement in the vampire world. The icing on the cake? Chapter 32.
I am having a lot of fun with my audio re-read of this series. It has been a little more than five years since I read this book the first time so it was definitely time to revisit this wonderful story. This was a book that once I really got into the story, I didn't want to put it down. I ended up listening to the whole audiobook in just a couple of days and I think I liked the book even more the second time around.

I do have to admit that I had a bit of a rough start with this book. This book begins several years after the events of the previous book where Cat left Bones to protect him. She is working her government job that she took to protect her mother at the end of the first book. She is very good at her job and has a good team working around her.

I learned something very important while listening to this book. I like Bones a whole lot more than I like Cat. So much more. Bones wasn't around for the first part of this book so it was all Cat. I missed Bones. A lot. As soon as Bones entered the story again, my enjoyment increased dramatically. If you had asked me a year ago, I would have told you that I loved Cat and Bones. I discovered that I do love Bones but Cat has the potential to drive me a little crazy at times. Maybe by the end of my re-read of the series, I will love her just as much as Bones.

There are quite a few really important developments in this book. Bones and Cat are reunited which is a very good thing. Cat is in some danger which is not so good but Bones is able to help keep her safe since he is back in her life. We do also get to meet some other important characters including Cat's team and some of Bone's friends and acquaintances. There are some pretty intense action scenes and some scenes that are more than a little hot.

Tavia Gilbert does such a great job with this series. She really brings both Cat and Bones to life. I love the voice that she used for Bones and think that the accent is perfect. All of the characters are very easy to distinguish with each voice used being unique and very believable. She handled a wide range of emotions and a lot of different types of scenes with ease in this book. I had no trouble listening to this book for hours at a time.

I do highly recommend this series to others. This is the second book in the Night Huntress series which really should be read in order since each book builds on previous events. I can't wait to continue my re-read of this amazing series!

Ten Tiny Breaths K A Tucker 9780991686001 Books

Okay. So, I'm having a really hard time trying to come up with words to express my feelings about this book. The first book I read by this author was "Burying Water". The story was excellent but K.A. Tucker's writing was just out of this world. Beautiful. Poetic. It almost made me want to sing some of her lines. After that book, I knew I had to read more from her. Seeing that this book had such great reviews (and now I see why), I decided to pick it up and let myself get lost in it. I found my way back to reality with tears streaming down my face. This story really did it for me. It was beautiful. No, it was PHENOMENAL !! A story that is filled with tragedy and heartache, yet the author still managed to create a heartfelt love story amongst all the chaos. I really don't know how to emphasize what a wonderful story this was.

In her acknowledgements, the author mentions how she worries about her kids getting behind the wheel with so many drunk drivers out there. Those words truly hit close to home since I worry about my son each and every day as he continues to near the age of obtaining his license. So I understand very well. I'm sure it's something ALL mothers worry about daily. Mrs. Tucker, if you're reading this, I want you to know that I have a friend who got into an accident just 3 days ago and yes, she was drunk driving. Thank God she's alive - although she really messed herself up badly - and that her accident was against a tree and not someone else whom she could have hurt real bad or even killed. I am going to force her to read this book, since she has no choice but to be in bed rest for the next 6 months, and I really think that ur words (which you mentioned in your last line of your acknowledgements) will come into effect. It will change her life and for you, it will be monumental. Thank you for a wonderful read. I only hope that my books can, someday, make the same impact on others as you have made on me. I can't wait to read more from you.
Why I Picked It Up

I’ve actually had this one sitting on my kindle account for some time. My sister read it and loved it so I decided to finally give it a try!

Plot

Kacey Cleary’s life is basically destroyed–four years ago a drunk driving accident killed her parents, boyfriend, best friend, and almost her. That was the day her life ended. The only thing she had to hold onto after her year in the hospital recovering was her little sister Livie. So when her Uncle appears to be close to sexually abusing Livie, Kacey takes her and flees to Miami. There, she meets Storm, who works at a strip club and takes her under her wing. She also meets her neighbor Trent, who seems to want to protect her. But both Kacey and Trent are hiding secrets–ones that can tear them apart forever.

This novel was definitely interesting enough to keep my interest. There was a lot of emotional drama, especially from Kacey. It was nice to see how she dealt with it while also trying to give Livie a good life. The pacing was fantastic and there were definitely some things that I wasn’t expecting. And there was a total, mind-numbing shock as everything came to a head, something that total threw me into a loop. There definitely weren’t many dull moments in this novel.

Leading Lady

Kacey was tough–on the outside and the inside. She hardened after the accident and got into some bad stuff, pulling herself out only because Livie wanted her to. Kacey really cared for her little sister and it was really evident throughout the novel. She didn’t really care about anything except her. Everything she did was for her sister. It was good to see her shell starting to be broken by Trent because then we saw peeks of the vulnerable, “before”-Kacey. I really enjoyed watching her emotional journey as she struggled to come to terms with the accident that happened four years prior.

Leading Male

Trent was a closed door, of sorts. We didn’t really get much information on him until the end of the novel, so he constantly was giving off that mysterious vibe. He was a good guy–he protected and cared for Kacey and Livie when they needed help. I had my suspicions about him but felt his heart was in a good place. He was seeking redemption or retribution himself and had no less emotional baggage than Kacey. He just didn’t let it show as well.

Romance

Trent and Kacey were definitely a couple with the potential to heal each other if not for the secrets that they were harboring. They had one of those chemistry-filled physical relationships with a side order of emotionally-heavy personal relationship. It was a weird mix that I usually wouldn’t like but it worked for them considering the secrets that they kept. They definitely had a trial period in this novel where even I gave up hope on them. Things were tough after those secrets were revealed.

Other Characters

Livie is Kacey’s younger sister. She reminded me a lot of me–driven, does well in school, wants to be a doctor. She was like the shining light in this story. She was there for Kacey no matter what and she kept the girl on track. I can’t wait to read her story as she travels to Princeton (where I’m going!) and maybe find love.

Storm was Kacey and Livie’s next door neighbor and eventually becomes Kacey’s best friend. I really liked Storm’s character. She definitely took Kacey and Livie under her wing. She was a really nice and selfless character. She also had an adorable daughter, Mia! I can’t wait to see more of her in the upcoming novels.

Conclusion

Ten Tiny Breaths was a really emotional read complete with characters hauling truckloads of baggage. I can’t wait to see what else happens in the world of this series.
At first I past off Kacey's personality because of her past but as the story moved along it just didn't make sense. She says she can avoid hot attractive guys for her life... Yet one look at Trent and she's on her knees. It's pathetic really I wanted to cringe. There were parts where I really wanted to give up but seeing that I bought the book... I HAD to finish it. Who knows? Maybe it would get better. But it didn't. Kacey got more and more annoying. She was extremely rude in parts where she didn't need to be. I get it. Her parents died. Her friend died. Her boyfriend died. But really? The drama was extremely over dramatic. (spoiler) WHY did Trent leave her just because it scared him. Why didn't he stay.. Maybe make her feel better? But he ran? He didn't run away for 2 days. Not 7 days. But 2+ WEEKS. It frustrates me to the core that a grown man didn't know better then to run away when hard times come. And why did she forgive him??? It was so easy too. Considering all that she's gone through.... After an apology and 5min.. She had her lips on him like nothing ever happened.

I don't recommend this book because the plot and characters are annoying. I should start reading reviews before I waste my money. I'm sorry, but I really wanted to like it... But I couldn't.
This is a jewel in the series of time travel books. I have enjoyed each of the books very much. Veronica is my favorite character because of her interesting choices and fascinating lives. She is a strong, smart woman who is easy to relate to. This book can be read as a stand alone as well as part of the series.

The Emancipation of Veronica McAllister A Middle Falls Time Travel Story eBook Shawn Inmon Reviews

Had to stop reading this one when she got to Berkeley. America's accelerated decline began in Berkeley and and I cannot abide by hippies, folk singers, crappy artists and uppity UCB students. That said, I own all of the books in this series and I am so glad I discovered Inmon.
Another great book from Shawn, continuing the Middle Falls storyline. The story of Veronica takes her back to her teenage years, after her life ends but she still retains her memories of her life. Will she marry the man that divorced just so she can have her daughters in this timeline?
Some of Veronica's choices are perplexing to me, more insight into her decisions would have helped me. But that doesn't mean others would think the same thing.
But its another great story that is so well written you want to continue to read and not put it down
I have read the first three books in this series and loved them. This one was no exception. (I opted to skip book #4 because it just didn't seem like it would be like the others.) At first, I was a little bored by the story and thought, oh no, this one isn't going to be as good. The beginning WAS a little long and drawn out, but I guess that's understandable for the first repeat life to kind of set the stage. I loved these characters and their lives. Once it got rolling, I was hooked and raced through it. I hated to see it end and almost (Almost!;-) wish she had awakened back where she was babysitting... oh well.

I have one more to read ("The Changing Lives of Joe Hart") and am going to go and pick up that one right now. I think that's the last in this great series, and that's a shame. Looking forward to what Mr. Inmon comes up with next!
I don’t usually cry when I read books. I simply put them down as soon as I start to get emotional!

But I was too invested in this one to give up on it. It was near the end when the tears started. But they were such good ones!

I lost both parents within months of each other recently & reading this time travel/rebirth book (as well as others in the series) made me long to go back in time myself. To try to do things better, to truly tell my parents & friends how much I loved them.

But the end of this book healed me of that longing.

Lives well lived. That’s what my parents achieved. They have gone on to a better place. Now I need to - here & now.

Thank you Shaun.
I was given this book as an advanced reader fo the author. However, that does not affect my opinion of his writing and wonderful stories. Veronica McAllister is another resident of Middle Falls, Oregon. She lived a life that was far from wonderful and decided to take advantage of Oregon's assisted suicide law. As in all of the Middle Falls series, she woke from her "suicide" in the the 1958. She was no longer an old woman who was confused and dazed at the circumstances. In her new life, she tried to make things better than they had in her previous life. Veronica is a person you learn to like a lot, but there were times I wanted to tell her what she should be doing. The story line never got boring or staid. It was one of the those books I can't wait to see how it ends, but never want it to end. I loved this story as I have everything Shawn Inmon has written. You do not have to read the series from book one to understand this story, but I advise you to read each one. Each is a stand-alone story, but each is worth the read. Whenever I finish one of Shawn's book, I am anxious for the next. I especially enjoyed this one because I was ten in 1958, so many of the customs and names of the day were very familiar to me. Don't pass this one up.
I loved this book. It's an intriguing question, if you could do it all over again, what would you do different? Veronica McAllister had a chance to do just that.

We meet Veronica as a teenager. She realizes her life had some how been put on rewind. She has the opportunity to relive it all over.

The characters are well developed. We get to know each one of them. I enjoyed watching her change as time passes. Through the years she gets several chances to start again. This is a time travel journey as well as a journey of discovery.

I found myself wondering where this was going through twists and turns.

If you enjoy time travel books you will love this.

Another winner!
This is another wonderful Book by Shawn Inmon, continuing his series of "What If's". What if you could do it all over again, live your life one more time, would you change everything or try to duplicate your successes?
The Emancipaton of Veronica McAllister is a really nice read, telling the life story - a few times - of a woman growing up and coming of age in the 50's and 60's. Her struggles and triumphs are brought to life in such a realistic way that it almost seems as though Inmon is relating hi own life rather than that of a young woman growing through her life's stages and phases.
Ultimately though what I loved best about this 5th book in the series is that it's a love story, and, like in all good love stories, Veronica winds up finding her true love, and lives happily ever after... eventually.
This is a jewel in the series of time travel books. I have enjoyed each of the books very much. Veronica is my favorite character because of her interesting choices and fascinating lives. She is a strong, smart woman who is easy to relate to. This book can be read as a stand alone as well as part of the series.
I'm a longterm fan of the series, have had the book on order for months. The author broke with the comforting convention (which was why I actually read the books), spent most of the book depressing me to tears by disempowering the main couple, and then ended on an unsatisfying cliffhanger that I'm not entirely sure I will wait to 2019 to resolve. Something new and exciting for the author? Sure. Fun for me? Not at all.

Archangel Prophecy A Guild Hunter Novel Nalini Singh 9780451491640 Books Reviews

I couldn’t wait for the next Archangel book and now I wish I had waited to read the reviews! I may have held onto the book until the next one. SPOILER alert!!! It ends on a cliffhanger! If you are like me, they aren’t my favorite endings.
Many people will complain for and against these negative reviews because of the cliffhanger, but if you are like me, then I just hate them no matter who the author is..
I LoVe Nalini Singh, and especially her Guild Hunter series, ( and Elena and Raphael are my FAVORITE!) but this one had multiple story lines going at once, - One I could easily follow, while struggling to follow the main one concerning Elena. I enjoyed the side story and the twists and turns, as well as seeing so many of the gang interspersed throughout , as usual. The downside for me was that there was quite a bit of prose and prophecies spoken in confusing rhetoric so I had a hard time figuring out what was happening. I think the biggest issue for me is the cliffhanger . I was already having a hard time following where it was going and some of the over the top dreams and prophecy verbage, and then the ending left me hanging. I love Nalini and will be waiting for the next installment as usual, but this wasn’t one of my favorites..and this book didn’t give me that happy glow after I was done like I am used to after reading about Elena and Raphael. I love them though, and will wait with bated breath to see what Nalini does with the next installment.
I have been left speechless. After reading this book I don’t know what to do! Am I expected to wait a year or two max to find out what happens?? I think it was a cliffhanger... so people if you don’t like cliffhangers please wait until the next archangel book!! I love this series the writing was flawless like always and the suspense and romance was in abundance! However I knew who it was way before it was discovered and that doesn’t usually happen and I’m kind of mad at how everything ended! Man I don’t want to say anything negative because I do love this series and I’ll wait to see what happens but I was disappointed in this book a little.
For the most part I enjoy reading a series, but I prefer each book have an ending. This book had a fairly interesting story but it went off into the twilight zone towards the end.
I really have no patience for enigmatic flowery phrases that make no sense.
The publishing company and Nalini Singh are completely disingenuous in how this book is presented to the reader. Anyone who has taken care of someone who is in decline and loosing abilities until they die, this book is a real trigger. For the elderly, who don’t know if they will be around next year, and who live on a fixed income, spending precious money on an author that has been tried and true only to be hit with a heroine who is essentially dying and being told outright that she is going to die, and to literally have it end like a book that was torn in too. There was no comfort or payoff after a book of such pain of watching a beloved couple that has been a light during dark times that are happening in the world. This is CRUEL. The reality is that if people don’t like a book, most people won’t review it. Especially if it is a beloved author who has wonderful history of amazing work. ‘Loyal’ fans that act like bullies will come down and shame someone into silence. This is what is happening in the real world and it is happening in Nalini’s websiteIn what should be a haven. So people hold their silence and the publishing house and the author don’t know what people really think. It seems that there was ‘too much for one book.’ All it would have taken was a sentence to give resolution. We might not like what the sentence said. But we would have had closure that this book does not provide. The author has never done a cliff hanger in the past and people were blindsided. Then when they say that they are upset on her blog. People come crashing down and humiliating them that maybe they are not ‘true guild hunter fans.’ Who cares and who are you to bully someone whose feelings are valid. There was a cancer survivor who knows how fragile life is, who was upset because she may never know how it ends. On her website, people have stated how they feel betrayed, and tricked. Some will walk away from the series all together. Hopefully, it is not because people simply wanted to stretch it out between 2 books in order to make 14 dollars instead of 7. That is where the betrayal really lies. People stay up until midnight to read the book to get away from the grim reality of life. Which is really dark right now. Guild hunter has always been dark, but each book offered relief and closure that was satisfying. ‘This is only a book,’ does not wash because this is life. People bullying people into silence because it is an opinion they don’t like and money held over as more important than people. In California it is a national disgrace that teachers and nurses are homeless. That anyone is homeless, but especially people who should have enough don’t have enough to live. That is when 7 dollars seems like a whole lot more important than to people who don’t have to worry about rent and making ends meet. The on the Facebook discussion page, you can’t discuss the book until November 4th. Is it because people will not be as upset by then? Is it because they are afraid that book sales will suffer if people tell the truth when they are angry and betrayed? Ridiculous. So be aware, this is a dark book from end to end, where they is no bright spot given or reward for people who trudge through this book all of a sudden you turn the page and there is a cheerful message about her other books. WTH!
I’m giving this two stars because I’ve been waiting forever for this book, and now I can’t read it because I read a little bit, read the reviews, and realized it ends on a horrible cliff hanger where everything could be (from my perspective) ruined and the next book won’t be out till sometime next year. So rather than punish myself by reading a not-HEA (when, like many people, I buy Singh’s books knowing there will be a HEA), I’ll wait till the next book comes out and if she ruins the characters and makes them suffer more I’ll just give up on this series and her others as well. The world is harsh and I read these books for happiness. If tragic endings and cruel cliffhangers are going to be allowed, then I can’t trust trust this author anymore. Very disappointed.
Cliffhanger...and not a good one. This one just feels like the author gave up in the middle of the ending and the whole tone of the book was rather depressing in my opinion. One can leave a fulfilling ending even if it is a cliffhanger. This one is not. So sad; use to love these characters but not sure will read more. Finished the book and felt like I forgot something...I hate that.

The Springsweet Saundra Mitchell 9780547608426 Books Reviews

Saundra Mitchell is a master of setting. All of her books have had a vivid and palpable feel to them, and this book is no exception. I could taste the dust of the road, smell the grass on the prairie, feel the water between my toes, etc. Whenever I want to feel like I'm in another world, I pick up one of Saundra's books.

Zora is a great character. Her grief is tangible and drives her to do selfish things because she can't see beyond it. That rang true to me. Desperation also drove her to find her inner strengths, which also rang true. And the guilt she felt from her attraction to Emerson was fantastic. I really liked Emerson, too. all his actions made sense according to his personality, and I had a good feel for who he is.

The shape of the story wasn't as effective as I was hoping. It was pretty even throughout, and I kept looking for more surprises. The foreshadowing of complications from the wells was natural and needed, but I was hoping for something on top of that--completely different, yet related. This story kind of seems a vessel to find the earth and water elements, and then the next book will have the actual conflict. Which is a bummer because I thought there were a few missed opportunities for conflict. For example, I wasn't sure of the point of the stage robbing, especially since we don't see Ellis again and the conflict with Royal doesn't really amount to anything. I am hoping it's not setup for the next book.

The ending, however, is superb. I loved how it ties the two books together while setting up for the third, which I will most definitely be reading.
In an attempt to escape a wounded heart, Zora Stewart packs a bag and heads West. Robbery, rescue and the occasional tumbleweed follow. Being a fan of the Vespertine inspired me to pick up the companion novel, The Springsweet. The setting shifts from Balitmore to the hardships of prairie life along the great frontier. Because of the setting, the book has a western country feel and for those readers who enjoy American settler stories, The Springsweet will be a pleasurable and clean read. It's appropriate for most ages and has a hint of mysticism, but mostly is grounded in the historical fiction of the time period. This book definitely has a different appeal than the The Vespertine and I wasn't as intrigued or connected to Zora as I became to the heroine, Amelia. The attraction and sweet love story is well-scripted. However, given the title of the book, I felt the actual areas where springsweet was involved should have been dimensionally developed. This portion of the story was skimpy and lacked detailing and information that could have contributed to the books depth by creating more of a shadow similar to that found in The Vespertine. Readers have certain elements they love about a series, and this specific string would have strengthened my personal fascination in the book. I felt a bit cheated and was left to figure out, or rather guess about what happened to Mr. Larsen. It was too vague and because of this, lacked impact. Emerson was the most developed character and will likely be memorable. Zora, she's a sweet girl, but does not come with the same force as the beloved Amelia. Good. Beach read. Summer read, and if you want clean and innocent -- this is a safe bet. 3.5 stars
I did not realize that this book was the second in a series until I finished it so I can assure you that you can read this book out of sequence and still enjoy it just as much. The only thing that you will be a little bit in the dark about is stories from Zora's past as she mentions a beloved cousin and her deceased fiance, which are discussed in more depth in the first book. I felt like I should know these people, but I clearly understood what was going on so it was not a big deal to read this book first. The setting was lovely, but a bit peculiar. It was interesting to see how a society lady would react to living on the prairie, what was then the very edge of civilization, in the Oklahoma Territories. Zora struggled to perform everyday, ordinary tasks, such as drawing water and hoeing weeds, with her corset on. And yet Zora felt so vulnerable without the undergarments on that it required quite a bit of adjustment for her to try and adapt to life on the frontier. Zora was not at all ready for the life that she unknowingly chose, but she was a trooper and tried to help her aunt and her little niece as much as possible. It was interesting to read about what a normal day would be like in the 1800s as a new settler and how little surprises made such a difference in your day. Finding a nest of eggs means a hearty breakfast instead of a small bowl of porridge. Helping a neighbor raise a barn is a good excuse to visit and to do a different kind of work for a day. Settlers may turn a blind eye to local villains knowing that there is worse out there that could replace them. Old prejudices die hard, but there was some freedom for different races and colors in the new territories.

Zora Stewart was an interesting character. She was so certain her life was over that she has no idea how young she truly is until she was given another chance at love and life. I wish I could say that her special ability made her more interesting, but she used her abilities a handful of times in the book, mostly towards the end, so it really was not as integral a part of the plot as I had assumed based on the book's description. Towards the end of the story, Zora and her aunt decide to advertise her ability and to charge a fee for it so that they can try and save enough money to buy some livestock and improve their own lives. These scenes were some of the most touching in the book for me. One family is given the gift of life when Zora finds a spring of sweet, clear water on their dying property; another wants to drain his neighbor's pond and use their water as his own; the last is given the bitter news that there is no water on his claim and that he has sunk all of his money into a barren wasteland. Even though Zora's talent was not the focal point of the book, it did dictate some of her decisions and made her a less-than-typical society miss of the time period.

As with most young adult books, the author of The Springsweet falls into the trap of creating a love triangle where there really isn't one to try and give the story more depth. Zora must choose between a handsome, young gentleman who follows her from Boston and a local settler who is reviled by Zora's aunt and others. Hmmm, let me think. Who will she choose? The tall, dark, handsome, charming and well educated Theo or the brash, confident, golden Emerson. Zora's choice is so obvious that it is fairly laughable that the author event presents the other as an option, but whatever, I guess it is normal to have two amazing men chasing after the heroine in books these days. That said, I did enjoy the sweet little romance between Zora and her Romeo. I wish that there could be another book to tell us more about their lives and how they get on as they are just barely getting started when the book ends rather abruptly. It will be interesting to see where the author goes with her series from here...

The Springsweet has some gothic overtones, but they are subtle and this is not what I would deem a gothic romance. Theo and Zora meet in a graveyard with none other than Edgar Allen Poe. The lovelorn, grieving young woman and supernatural aspects also would lead you to think this is a more traditional, gothic romance, but the setting itself does not lend to a traditional gothic romance. You do not have the strictures of society or the brooding villain to make this a true gothic romance, but it was an interesting little romance with gothic touches. It was not at all what I was expecting when I picked it up, but I enjoyed reading it and will definitely check out other books by this author. I loved her writing style and think that she could make just about any topic appear interesting and important.
This is a wonderful book. It is true to this time period and very exciting. Great plot, barley any boring points in the book. Cliffhanger s throughout the book.
Anyone who knows me understands my love of romance books, mainly of the contemporary variety. But, because I want to spread my wings and explore new genres, I decided that this book would totally do that for me. Besides that, Summer is a fantastic person, so I wanted to support her in anyway I could. (Especially since this is her debut novel.)

What I'm getting at here is that I picked up Link thinking, sci-fi? Not my typical go-to book, but the premise sounded great. What I didn't expect though, was to fall in love with it like I did. And we're not talking mediocre love here, we're talking OMG THIS BOOK IS FABULOUS love.

This is the story of Kira, a seventeen year old typical girl. She's spunky and fun, sweet and shy, the exact kind of heroine I adore in my YA books. The thing about Kira is, she's not exactly who she thinks she is. After getting hit by a burst of light (AKA an actual star) one night in the lake, Kira is transferred to another realm far from her planet and world. There she comes face to face with a group of strangers who have experienced the very same thing that she has. The only thing is, Kira is able to travel between her home and this other realm. A place where her missing father might actually be.

Sounds complicated, right? Well, it's not. You see, Summer has this way of writing that I can't even describe. It's poetic, a natural, gorgeous flow of words where she takes you on a journey, rather than just telling you a story instead. I felt everything Kira felt, experiencing her fear and joy along the way, all while praying she found answers and her way back home to her mother and friends. The descriptions, the setting, the heartbreak, the tension...everything sucked me in to the point where I could not go to sleep at night.

So, should you read this? Yes. Absolutely. Great read. I cannot wait until the next book.
Such a great book! So refreshing to have a clean book with an interesting plot. I can't wait to get my hands on the rest of the series!
Exciting..suspenseful...cant wait to turn the page, loved it. What a journey this author takes you on, what imagination...CANNOT WAIT for next book.
All thought scifi and young adult fiction is not my go to type of book to read, this book was well very written. It kept my interest the entire book. The book was perfect for a vacation read. I will definitely be awaiting the next book.
I enjoyed this book very much. The idea of a parallel world has been something I have thought of on occasion. I would recommend this book to anyone who has an open mind.
I enjoyed this book so much! The premise is truly unique and skillfully developed, filled with little surprise nuggets that keep you wanting to read "just one more chapter". I'll look forward to reading the next book as soon as Ms. Weir can get it to us!
I prefer reading to eating, and books like this are the reason why. As YA Lit, Link is excellent. As a novel of any type, Link is also excellent literature. The writing is very good. The story is compelling. The characters are interesting. The dialogue is genuine. The author's imagination is outstanding. I usually don't read Book 1 until Book 2 is available, but I'm glad I made an exception in this case.
The book is okay, but near the end Dollie is force fed (tube in the nose). The book is pretty informative about what suffragettes did. There is a good deal of protesting and breaking things. Unfortunately, there is quite a description of Dollie and other marchers being assaulted, both verbally and physically (and raped), by policemen. While it may be historically accurate, I do not consider this content appropriate for kids.

Scenting Scandal Scandalous Siblings Book 2 edition by Suzi Love Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I really enjoyed this book and the Jamison sisters and their quirky ways, looking forward to the next
To be a member of the eccentric and outlandish Jamieson clan, you must have unconventional and unique talents, fight anything or anyone for your loved ones, but the most important trait is a Highly Suspicious Nature! The Jamieson also collect enemies, like the Syndicate, who will kidnap, blackmail and even kill for more riches.

Lady Laura Jamieson has a very sensitive nose and uses its talent to help others with the lotions, fragrances and medicines she makes. Her father never loved her and she took up subjects he enjoyed, but his only love is money. Her sisters, brothers and her Great Aunt Aggie have always loved her unconditional. Laura knows she can find her olfactory match if she sniffs and compares every man's scent. Laura has many log books full of findings, but no man can measure up, not even Richard St. Martin.

Richard St. Martin, the Earl of Winchester, is a man known for absorbing any knowledge he gets his hands on and for his sultry bedroom talents. His father was a unloving man and his mother die after another ill advised pregnancy. Richard loves and cares for his sisters, but isn't ready for marriage. When he does marry, he wants a biddable wife that he doesn't love, so when she dies in childbirth he will not be crashed. Richard does have a secret that he carries that could destroy his careful and planned out world and Lady Laura is intelligent enough to smell it out.

Laura's sister marries Richard's cousin and now their worlds are tied together and neither is happy about it. They must work together to uncover the enemy who wants to hurt and control the Jamieson clan. Laura will not be treated as a child and having Richard sticking his nose in her business, no matter how wide his shoulders are. Richard will not allow the stubborn, opinionated and headstrong Laura turn his world upside, no matter how beautiful, captivating and desirable she is. Their journey has many perils along the way like a crazy Countess, rifle shots, man sniffing, a blinded Earl, steamy kisses, a lady that leaps before she looks, explosions, more man sniffing, kooky relatives and a heart warming and passionate love story.

This is Ms. Love second book of the Scandalous Siblings series and I really enjoyed it. I love a book with inflexible and tenacious hero and heroine who fight their inevitable destiny. She created so many comical and formidable walls that Laura and Richard had to slam their heads against. Ms. Love spins a tale of two hearts that are bruised, slightly dented and screaming for the love they deserve. She used fast paced, witty dialogue and whimsical and original characters to suck me into her book world. Ms. Love then made me hyperventilate from laughter, use my last fire extinguisher from her spicy scenes, scream at the characters stupidity and even cry (that ugly, red faced, unattractive one) when Laura and Richard stop fighting long enough to declare their love. Ms. Love gave birth to a world that I did not want to leave, but pitch a tent and get comfortable in. I give Ms. Love 4 fingers up and 8 toes and I THANK her for the hours she gave me to explore her creation.
There’s something so loveable about the bluestocking/rake trope, even though I’ve read it countless times. As long as writers find new and interesting ways to make each story unique and original, I’m happy to read them. And a bluestocking scientist is even more fun. Pippa from Sarah MacLean’s wonderful One Good Earl Deserves a Lover and Minerva from One Week to Be Wicked by Tessa Dare come to mind. Here, in Suzi Love’s very amusing Scenting Scandal, we encounter another smart young woman (along with her intelligent and scientifically-minded siblings) who is determined to find her perfect mate by his smell. Yes, you read that right, by his olfactory qualities. Lady Laura Jamison is an aromatherapist who uses herbs and carefully documented scientific experiments to conduct her tests but the one man she is inexorably drawn to doesn’t match her olfactory trials, darn it! If this sounds a bit silly at first, you won’t be laughing long when you read this thoroughly charming love story.
"Something about his soap-scented linen shirt nagged at her senses, a tiny incongruence she’d ponder later in her distillery." (p30)
Richard, the Earl of Winchester—and I couldn’t help but think of Jane Austen’s family joke about the name, Richard, as I read it—is an old friend of the family, a typical gentleman aristocrat who has taken mistresses over the years and is now charged with acting as protector to the two youngest Jamison daughters, Lottie and Laura, while his cousin, Sherwyn, a duke, and the ladies’ sister, Becca, are on their honeymoon. He doesn’t relish the idea, but he doesn’t mind in the least being close to “Luscious Laura.” He is terribly attracted to the raven-haired beauty and their good-natured and provocative sparring is the best part of this sweet romance.
But Richard has a shameful secret that he’s terrified the intellectual and brainy Laura will discover, so he pushes away all his feelings for her, desperately trying to not become too involved with her. But he cannot help himself as her fire, her intelligence, and her wit utterly fascinate and beguile him. And eventually undo him.
“To his misfortune, he noticed everything she did or said.” (p20)
Laura is a strong and willful heroine, as astute as she is attractive. She has a lovely no-nonsense quality about her that allows her to pursue her scientific interests yet leaves her time to tend to her close-knit family and her bravery surprises Richard at every turn, especially when they encounter danger. She is no man’s fool and can tell a simpering dandy from a mile away.
“It wasn’t in her nature to expect a gallant knight to scoop her up and carry her across a muddy road. She’d rather grab whatever was on hand and build her own bridge across.” (p43)
What is odd, however, but perhaps in keeping with Richard’s determination not to deflower a virgin—not to mention her brothers would kill him—is that their love is never fully consummated! They do pretty much everything but the deed and this surprised me considering how highly-charged their encounters were. I can’t help but feel a wee bit let down but the story is so fun to read, the pace moves along at a nice energetic clip, and the hero, heroine, as well as all the minor characters, are all interesting and enjoyable to read, that I can’t mind too much.
Richard is a smooth, funny, and magnetic gentleman, the perfect strong and protective foil to Laura’s inquisitive nature, one that drives him to distraction. The very qualities that vex him—her keen curiosity, her meticulousness, and her desire to explore more of the world—delight and captivate him. He knows a life with her as his wife will never be dull, which makes his ridiculous determination to seek a dull and boring wife all the more silly. And her unwillingness to consider him as a suitor because he doesn’t match her scientific experiments makes for some hilarious moments.
The humor in this book is lighthearted and infectious. The Jamisons are a loving and close-knit bunch, despite the fact that the patriarch of the family prefers to be away on archaeological digs. Their loyal and quirky servants are all former criminals, saved from a harsh life, Lottie provides comfort to Laura while Aunt Aggie manages the home fires.
“It was a Jamison family joke that even if the sky was falling to earth, Aunt Aggie would still manage to ring the bell for tea and cakes.” (p126)
The mystery element in this story is secondary but it becomes the impetus for our hero and heroine to fall in love. They are thrown together in their search and determination to stop a greedy woman from forming an illegal share trading syndicate and the dangerous moments make for an entertaining and exciting read. It also allows both Laura and Richard to see each other in a new and attractive light.
Though this is the second book in a series featuring a family of scientist siblings, I didn’t feel I was missing anything and can be read as a standalone.
Memorable moments
”’Sweetheart, if anything happened to you, my heart would forever be empty.’” (p116)
“'I don't think love remembers to follow any of the rules of science. Love veers off the straight and narrow pathways simply to trick those of us with analytical minds. The strategy then is to recognize when we've been wrong, admit our mistakes, and move on.'” (p276)
If you enjoy witty and sizzling conversation, a meeting of the minds of two people destined for each other, and a mystery to boot, you will find much to like in this engaging romance.
A modified version of this review first appeared on Romantic Historical Reviews.
I loved the strength , intelligence, innocence and charm of the clever females. a recommended series for those experiencing a lack of self-confidence.
love it!ready for the next one-hope its longer than the last 2!!!

The Night Riders Matt Furie 9781936365562 Books Reviews

This book is amazing. Opa bought it for my 3 year old, and the first time I read it I was crying with laughter. I am not sure why it struck me as so funny, it has potential to be scary, with snakes, spiders, weird trolls smoking pipes while leaning against tree stumps, but my kids love it, and the fold-out poster is a great addition.
My three year old nephew loved The Night Riders!! We hung the poster on the wall in his room and he loves to bring people in to show off the beautiful poster before he reads the book to them. The book has no words so each time my nephew reads it he makes up a story that is a little different each time. Beautifully Illustrated!!
A frog sets out on a journey at night with his friend rat on his bike. As they peddle down the road, they make new friends (a bat and a dragon-like reptile). Their journey takes them to unusual places like an underground lair and a deserted town. The friends have lots of fun, and even have to escape a creepy crab-monster.

The Night Riders is a wordless story that I enjoyed. The story told by the pictures is about friendship and a night-time adventure. The illustrations are very detailed and give the reader a lot to look at. I think the book is great for kids with a lot of imagination. I thought the story told by the pictures isn’t always straight forward so you have to really pay attention it (I had to explain some of it to my little sister Josie). The frog is a great character, with a lot of emotion shown in his face. The rat friend is very cute too. The details in each panel are fun to search out. I also wanted to mention that this book has a great feel to it. It is an unusual size (10″x6″) and the paper feels like artwork paper. This is all a nice touch by the publisher. The funky-cool world created by Mr. Furie in The Night Riders is one I think kids with a big imagination will love .
*NOTE* I got a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Your appreciation of this book will depend on your and your children's tolerance for weird stuff and mystery. There are no words in this book, rather there are open-ended illustrations that your child can narrate to his or her liking. You can also play "eye spy" with your child, looking for the hidden creatures and speculating on what they are. (Is that a bat? Where are its wings?)

The illustrations are, to say the least, bizarre and highly imaginative; I would describe them as looking like they were done by a teenager still learning how scale, color theory, and perspective works, and variously overdoing it and doing it wrong — but in a good way. (What's up with that garage door? Why is the millipede bigger than the kit fox?) It kinda feels like a picture book as done by an outsider artist who has no business making picture books — but again, in a good way. (Yes, this is weird, but not disturbing like Henry Darger!)

The jacket doubles as a poster, but frankly my children would be too terrified to hang it in their room, for fear of attracting monsters and creeping bugs. They do love opening it up and poring over it in full light of day, though.
All the trippiness of the 70's but with the addition of remote controls. A perfect tool for settling down for a great conversation with your kid. A perfect gift for the parent of a 2 - 6 year old.
I love this artist and this book is a gem. Bought it for my nephew. I don't care if he likes it, I do. the pictures are mystical and enchanting, I love having the freedom to make up the story as we go along. A good book for first steps towards reading!
Perfect book for children who can talk but can't yet read - there are no words in this book! It's all very vivid, strange, and beautiful illustratoins that are incredibly entertaining for anyone with an imagination. You can make up a different story every time. There is so much detail on every page to explore and makeup a story-line for, it's fantastic!
This picture book will go down as one of the all-time greats. Amazing illustrations with a slightly creepy feel that you can't stop admiring. I wish this book was around when I was a child because I know how much I would have loved it. So much fun. Highly recommended!

CELEB CRUSH edition by Nicole Christie Contemporary Romance eBooks

I have been lost in the tsunami of stepbrother romances that are flooding the market at the moment. Which is kind of ironic, because Nicole Christie wrote one of the best in that genre, long before it was particularly popular. Her debut novel, "Falling for the Ghost of You", was a fantastic read - engaging, sexy and laugh-out-loud funny - and I was in love with her characters and writing.
CELEB CRUSH edition by Nicole Christie Contemporary Romance eBooks Reviews

This story starts out with a Hollywood hunk needing an extra minder. That's right another minder. One whom he actually will listen too. She just happened to meet up with him after catching her cousin in bed with her fiancee. So starts a two year contract including NDA written all over it. But when she lies to her family about her love life that's when the story takes a turn. He is willing to act as her boyfriend. But what cost and who will get hurt? This was the second time I read this story. Will look into other books by this author.
I love Nicole Christie's writing. It is first and foremost FUNNY and WITTY. She has such a unique way of making her characters say and do things that you've never heard or seen before, but it works and it's memorable. I loved Juliet from Slow Burn. I liked Andi in Celeb Crush. My only problem with Andi is that for someone who is (supposedly) tough and doesn't give a damn, she is so easily manipulated.

Spoilers???

Megan and Bran, Kate, Jessica, Nate, LUKE...everyone (some for better, others for worse) plays her; they get her to do things she claims she doesn't want to do yet you're scratching your head wondering things like, "WHY is she having dinner with the chick that tried to ruin her relationship?!" There were too many personality and behavior contradictions that prevented this book from being 5 stars. Another example (and this one almost made me quit reading) Luke professes his interest, his feelings for Andi, and when they don't seem reciprocated, he sleeps with someone else?! I hate it when the h or H does this in books! Hate it so much.

However, despite all my complaints, I couldn't stop reading. I laughed A LOT. I just wish Andi was as tough and smart as she claimed she was. Other than that, still love Nicole Christie. Oh and if the author is somehow reading this, could you PLEASE write more memorable first intimate scenes? Not all intimate scenes have to be great, but at least the first time? Slow Burn lacked this and so did Celeb Crush. And I am not talking about smut - just sexier intimate scenes.
Take Tarryn Fisher's usual cold-hearted heroines but take away the underlying dark/depressed/tortured undertones and replace it with spunk and you get Andi. She is full of anger, hate possibly a little bit crazy and in need of therapy but she owned it. She was full of spunk and anything that came out of her mind and mouth were incredibly hilarious.

This was so entertaining - not very realistic but then stories involving big Hollywood celebrities tend to lean on fairy-tale-ish as opposed to realism, right?

My only complaints (albeit minor) were
1. I would have wanted a little more emotional vulnerability from Andi. Empathy (especially on the painful part of the plot) wasn't that strong given that my emotional connection to Andi wasn't so strong. She amused me but I didn't really strongly feel for her and this is because as she herself said "she has a pathologically thick skin"
2. I would have wanted Luke's character to be more fleshed out. He had personality but she completely eclipsed him.
Then along came her follow-up novel and my admiration came to a screeching halt. I really didn't like "Slow Burn". In fact, I was probably its harshest critic, noting that I hoped Ms Christie would go away and regroup before writing her next novel.

Well, she regrouped alright.

Bad Boy Diana Wieler Books

I saw this award-winning Canadian novel mentioned by a college student who had found it invaluable for his coming out in high school, and I can understand why.

A.J. is a 16 year old hockey player in Moose Jaw, Saskatchuwan, on the sparsely-populated Canadian prairie, who is desperately trying to put his baby fat behind him. To that end he bought a second-hand weight set which sits in the basement of his best friend's home. Tully, named Tulsa after the Oklahoma city where his formerly hippy parents probably conceived him, is a golden-haired, air-guitar playing social wizard, beloved by all. A.J. likes spending time at Tully's home because he has a family, including a sister, Summer, who mesmerizes him, whereas A.J. only has his father whose work schedule does not allow much interaction.

Both A.J. and Tully try out for the local Triple-A hockey team and, in a surprise to them both, they make it, though A.J., who tends to watch the puck rather than the game, knows he is marginal in the coach's eyes. Much as A.J. reveres Tully he knows that Tully has a dark side that may include hashish use. But Tully has a classic bright red Ford Mustang with a leather interior and a V-8 engine, and there is no place that A.J. feels more at ease than in the passenger seat with his best friend driving, headlights cutting through the vastness of the prairie. A.J. rarely talks, but Tully always listens, and as they cruise together to school and to hockey practice Tully and his car are A.J.'s refuge.

But Tully has a secret that involves a mean-spirited member of the same team, Derek, who attends a different high school. When A.J., at Summer's request, tries to track Tully down one night by bicycle, he spots the red Mustang near a bar which, A.J. discovers, has same-sex clientele. In his rush to leave he crashes into Tully who has Derek's arm draped over his shoulder. This event occurs in mid-book. The rest of the book deals with A.J.'s reaction to what he sees as a violation of his trust by Summer's brother and his former best friend.

The book has aged well over twenty years. There is nothing to date it except for the mention of $1 bills, since Canada moved to $1 coins years ago. It is such an excellent book that it should be on the required reading list in high schools. Diana Wieler creates narrative and events and situations that transcend most YA novels. It is truly one of the best.

Bad Boy Diana Wieler Books Reviews

One of the most unique perspectives on a gay character I've ever come across in YA. This book includes such little seen topics as a past tense drug problem, anger management issues, and what to do when your boyfriend's a bit abusive but you kind of like it. It also includes a smart, assertive female protagonist, and basically treats every one of its characters with unflinching respect.
Didn't feel any compassion for the characters. Its sad. The content and subject matter could have been moving, but the characters were very predictable and very flat.
A.J. Brandiosa and his best friend Tully have finally made it! They're on the Moose Jaw Saskathewan AAA hockey team The Cyclones. All that working out has finally gotten rid of A.J.'s pesky baby fat and he's starting to like the way that he looks and the way that he can accomplish things on the ice that have always eluded him. Tully has always been the popular showboat both on and off the rink. But when A.J. gets a bit too physical in an early game and gets labelled as a "Bad Boy" and the team's enforcer it's A.J.'s name that gets in the paper and A.J kinda likes the attention. But then A.J. discovers that his best friend is gay. Worried about his own reputation and even more worried by his feelings about Tully that he now sees in a different light, A.J. must re-evaluate everything in his life and how's he gonna do that when it was always Tully that he could confide in?

Born and raised in rural Michigan, when I first heard about this book I was intrigued. What's not to like about an award winning coming out story that features masculine rural guys and hockey players no less? Then I read some of the negative reviews...

One 2012 review called this 1989 Governor General Award winner incredibly dated. After reading the book myself I believe that that's a bit unfair. Growing up in a remote rural area is a bit like growing up in the past and I'm pretty certain that much of the way that Moose Jaw is painted in this book is just as true today as when the book was first published.

Another reviewer objected to Tully's telling A.J. that A.J. wasn't gay and because Tully was a gay guy, A.J. took his word for it. Fact is, I believe that A.J. really wasn't gay, though he might have been willing to try it for Tully. A.J. was attracted to women throughout the book. Yes, he had some erotic thoughts about Tully as well but they mostly unsettling for him. And the guy's had a dynamic where Tully did tell A.J. how to think about things. This was really just an extension of their instigator-follower type of relationship.

On the whole this was really a well thought out story of two guys redefining their relationship in the aftermath of one of them coming out. For me it read as realistic and insightful and still as relevant as when it was published over 20 years ago. I'd recommend it.

A Woman of Passion Virginia Henley Books

I have been a fan of Virginia Henley's for a long time. I have read every one of her books to date, and I noticed a long time ago that she is a great storyteller. Her books are vibrant and colorful and her characters always come to life. She understands politics and comedy and sex (and that they are usually intertwined) so well, that I always came away from her books having learned something. I was so happy when A Woman of Desire came out that I would finally get to read something new of Ms. Henley's, and I was not disappointed.
Bess is a wonderfully independent, passionate (hence the title) woman. She is smart and funny and knows her own mind. And nothing any of the four men she loves (or is in love with, as the case may be) can change her from her course. I loved the intrigue and the tension, and, of course, the wonderfully passionate love scenes (which the book would be incomplete without). Another thing I love is that her stories are so historically accurate. It's wonderful to see the past come alive.
I finished this book in three days (would have been less, but I had to go to work!), and when I got to the end, I wished it had gone on for another 100 pages or so. Now I want to go back and read all of Ms. Henley's other books over again! I think I'll start tonight!

A Woman of Passion Virginia Henley Books Reviews

An old high school favorite, I read this book because of a good friend gave this book high appraisals. I'm not usually a romance novel kind of girl, but this book definitely hit romance spot on! The right amount of love mixed with lust, drama, romance and a tad bit of historical referencing make this book a great read!
The book was okay to read, definitely not one of her best.
It is hard to decide when to buy a book, the best way to determine is if you like the author.
One of her best! Highly recommended
I have read this book several several times and its good every time. I love this story. This is truely a work of passion from Virginia Henley.
This book is one of my favorites! Strong female lead, and a couple strong male leads. I have read it more then a couple times LoL!
I love this book it is by far the best I have had the pleasure of reading the loss of overdue love and after that the worried mother to make everything she had work so hard for not to be lost making decisions that would make her family happy just love this book wow
There's nobody that can compare to Bertrice Small absolutely nobody so compared to that writer of romance everyone's a three but maybe someday I'll find someone else who does detail so vividly..... sadly thus had the story but not the lush detail...
