Set in what was then part of Spartanburg County in South Carolina, Thicketty follows the lives of Walt Banneck and his son, Cal, through three of the most tumultuous decades of the nineteenth century. During this time, a war is fought and lost. While navigating through a world turned upside-down, the path before them is one that pits them against both the law and the lawless.
Walt, who had been shunned by his pious neighbors before the war, returns home to become not only a successful farmer and entrepreneur, but the area’s champion as well. Meanwhile, Cal, who idolizes his seldom-at-home father and receives little kindness from his mother, is drawn into the bosom of the farm’s Negro family. For everyone on the Banneck farm, especially Cal, day-to-day life is monotonous and dull. That changes when Walt decides that his children should receive at least a rudimentary education and arranges for the young and beautiful Sammie Trivette to be their tutor. Cal is immediately and totally smitten, but decides to keep his love a secret until he has something more to offer her. That day finally comes, and with it a series of events that would test the mettle of the strongest men.
Theirs is a story of love and hate, of protectiveness and treachery, of compassion and vindictiveness, but above all, it is one of youthful determination and the undying hope that tomorrow will be a better day.

It took me awhile to get into this book, but once I got acquainted with the characters (many to learn quickly) I really began to enjoy the book and it was hard to put down. Lots of children being born and many other persons being added to the story as the years go by. The author does a splendid of developing each character...such a mixture of personalities. Hardly ever a dull moment with many surprises along the way.Product details

Enjoyed the storyline, but I often became confused as to who was who. There was so many characters that I had to go back to figure out who they were and how they fit in. It slowed down the story for me. My favorite characters were Cal and Lottie.
I loved this book! A really fun read that grips you quickly and keeps you interested until the end. I couldn't wait for the next book. I have since read the 2nd, Trinity, and it was just as good. I am now starting the 3rd, Return to Thicketty, and it has grabbed me just as much. You will get drawn into the time period and these people's lives.
I enjoyed this book, but my only complaint would be that some of it seemed to skim over the PEOPLE part of the story and just focus too much on the war/KKK parts. It was a bit difficult for me to keep all the characters straight and in their proper generations and/or families.
Otherwise a good read, and I did purchase the sequel ....
A well written book about life in the south prior to, during and immediately following the Civil War. Life was hard and the author made that abundantly clear. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 was because of the number of characters in the book. I suggest the reader make family trees as you read the book in order to keep people straight. Maybe that was just my problem...... I look forward to reading the next book in the series.
I just finished Book 1 and immediately got Book 2 on Unlimited. The book was very interesting and gave you a good idea of what life was like for these families and problems they faced dealing with the Civil War. I got very interested in all the characters and just am enjoying the saga of these family members as well as seeing how the South was so affected by the war.
Good story about a family before, during and after Civil War. It has interesting characters that I wanted to learn more about. There if real life in this book; love, hate, death, lives being changed in every chapter. It's a history, love, family tragedy novel. If you like drama of the South and the history that goes with it, it is a good read. Can't wait to read the second and third books.
If you enjoy historical fiction as I do, this is a wonderful story of the south during the Civil War. The story gives an excellent description of how hard it was for farmers to continue their livelihood with a war going on around them. No one person is perfect but this family fights to survive in a very divisive time in history. The author does an excellent job of making the characters in this story realistic. As the reader I felt I knew them and could almost predict how they would respond to events. This is the first in a series but can stand alone.
