Misheard Lyrics What if everything you heard was wrong? Mike Ellsworth 9780988468238 Books

I thoroughly enjoyed this original, inventive, and convention-bending romp. This may not be for you if you are easily offended by irreverent musings of fictional characters — about religion, faith, philosophy, ethics, science, and sex — that might not mirror your own beliefs. However, you’ll find a lot to reflect upon if you like to read and then develop your own perspective on these issues.

This well-researched novel references current and past thinking from intellectual luminaries to develop new perspectives that explore the intersections of these areas. You might find yourself saying “I wondered about that myself!” I did, but the ideas in this book are much more diverse and fully developed than anything I came up with.

The style is as original as the content. Heed the author’s warning: the first chapter is intentionally awful. Be patient — the unusual and important second chapter resolves this oddness as two friends (a lapsed Catholic “novelist” and a true-believer pastor) begin a dialogue that provides context for the observations, stories, and a near-novella that develop the themes. These are not cookie-cutter characters — they are fully-developed, flawed, unexpected, and amusing.

The frequent off-beat humor comes in many forms — intellectual, observational, slapstick, and groaners — so be ready to supply your own laugh track.

Misheard Lyrics What if everything you heard was wrong? Mike Ellsworth 9780988468238 Books Reviews

I really enjoyed this book. This well written and well researched novel was at the same time thought provoking, and entertaining. Explore your own beliefs through the exchanges of it's two main characters and be surprised along the way.
Mike Ellsworth's book "Misheard Lyrics" is the journey of two good friends, Charles and Chip (one an author, the other a Methodist Minister), down the road of theism, anti-theism and all theisms in between.

They discuss, in no particular order Mormonism, Mandaeism, The Rapture, The Second Coming, What if Christ came from a rich family, or in modern times, or both, Christian Scientists, Chaos Magic and much more.

The book questions the lyrics we hear in music and the stories we read in religious texts...is what we are hearing or reading actually what was meant by the author or performer? With religious texts over the many years or transcribing and translation how can they possibly be accurate?

There is a strong chapter on Empathy, and how it can heal. This includes a very interesting heroine named Jeannie at I would like to get to know better.

It's a good read and makes one think..."Did I hear that right"?
I wasn't quite sure what to expect when I ordered this book, and I was really glad that I went for it.
I actually ordered two, so I could gift a copy to a friend who I knew would enjoy it, after seeing the pre-views.

This book has really great, unpredictable stories in it. Each one is so unique, entertaining, sometimes shocking, and worth the time to escape into.

I couldn't put it down until I got to the end of the chapter, and even then, I couldn't wait to get back to it.
Glad I took a chance on this book. I was riveted while reading it, and I am pretty sure you will be as well.
Mike Ellsworth’s novel, MISHEARD LYRICS WHAT IF EVERYTHING YOU HEARD WAS WRONG?, is both entertaining and serious.

The two main characters are Chip and Charles. The former is a Methodist minister with a rebellious streak that almost prevented him from graduating from divinity school. The latter, who was raised Catholic but had rejected the Catholic message by the time he was 12, is a writer who is attempting to write his first novel. Both are looking for answers.

The novel combines magic, dream and reality, and important dualities include humanity and divinity, good and evil, dream and reality, and love and power.

As Charles searches for answers, he leads us through various religions and possible Apocalypses. And as he completes each chapter, he gets together with Chip, with whom, after much obscene byplay, he discusses some of the theological issues.

For me, two scenes stood out. In the first, Mormon and former presidential candidate John Mittney, is influenced and finally led by a Mandaean woman, who convinces him of the errors of Mormonism and tells him that he and a thoroughly human Jesus have been chosen as the “two Witnesses to the Exaltation.”

In the second, AI expert and data scientist Jeannie Darcy discovers that she can help people by using the information in government databases, which she has an uncanny ability to assimilate. She is, by the way, 33, the traditionally stated age at which Christ was crucified.

The more of her that is connected to the computer, the more power she has to solve the world’s problems, and eventually she succeeds in eliminating terrorism. She then turns to the much bigger problem of drug addiction but finds she can only progress if she joins her entire soul to the computer. She therefore gives up her body and her boyfriend Juston, so she can gain sufficient power to serve humanity.

Toward the end of the novel, Charles turns to snagology, the most important tenet of which is “I am the only person in the Universe and I exist for the entertainment of the Viewerverse,” in other words, for those who are watching a cosmic reality show, of which he is the star. As the religion becomes more popular, however, other people want to be recognized, and he eventually leaves it, in part because it is too solipsistic.

In the final scenes of the novel, Charles is shot by his ex-lover Edie, who then kills herself. What does he do? He heads to the nearest Catholic church to make his first confession in 40 years, after which he wakes up in the hospital. Is this a conversion of sorts? We don’t know.

Meanwhile, he sees Chip for the last time, who reveals that he is abandoning his wife and child to head to California with the church secretary in tow, and it is clear that he may have misheard the lyrics of Methodism and that both of them may have misheard the lyrics of the “universal song.”
